School and Community
National Experimental High School (NEHS), situated in Taiwan’s “Silicon Valley”, the high-tech Science-Based Industrial Park, is a public, coeducational school (preprimary-12). The school is multi-cultural in that four of the departments are for local Chinese and adopt the Taiwan (ROC) national curriculum, while the Bilingual Department (1-12) serves students in the English-speaking community who either seek an American college-preparatory education or plan to transfer to the local school system. Students come from business, professional, government and diplomatic families. Forty-seven percent of the Bilingual Department parents have Ph.D.’s. Of a total school enrollment of 3007, the Bilingual Department has 565 students, of whom 299 carry US passports. This year’s senior class has 51 students.
Accreditation
National Experimental High School is accredited by the ROC Ministry of Education and is administered by both the ROC Ministry of Education and the National Science Council. The Bilingual Department is operated as a magnet program.
Faculty
The Bilingual Department has 60 certified full-time teachers. Forty have Master’s degrees; two have Ph.D.’s. Nationalities include Chinese (38), American (19), and Canadian (3). The average teaching experience of the faculty is fourteen years. The ratio of certified faculty to students is 1:10.
Grading Scale
The Bilingual Department’s grading scale and GPA points are outlined on the student transcript. Highest GPA in the class and average class GPA are also listed on the transcript. The GPA includes all classes taken in the Bilingual Department from grade 9 and is on a 4.0 weighted scale. New seniors are not included in class rankings, while the rest of seniors are ranked by their accumulated GPA from Gr. 9~12.
Curriculum
Our students face a rigorous five-day week, demanding instructors, and a fully bilingual (English and Mandarin) curriculum. The highly competitive and challenging program is reflected in somewhat lower GPA’s than might usually be expected. NEHS operates on a semester system with a 200 day school year, beginning in late August and dismissing in late June. There are prerequisites for all AP classes with the exception of AP Social Studies which is open to any interested student.

English:
Taught by native speakers, our upper school English program is a college-preparatory course of study. The entire program is literature-based with intensive grammar, vocabulary, and composition strands, all of which stress the writing process. Courses are: Genre Approach to Literature (9), American Literature (10), British Literature (11), and World Literature (12). Since 1995, an honors option has been available in grade nine. In grades ten and eleven an honors section is offered.

Chinese:
Taught by local teachers, our intensive, total immersion Chinese program (Grade 1-12) takes students from their entry levels to the highest levels they can attain in the time they study here. For class of 2007, Chinese levels 10, 11, and 12 are equivalent to AP Chinese courses. Textbooks are the same as those used by students in local schools. From level 7 ~ 9, Chinese classes are counted as honors courses.

Mathematics:
Geometry (H), Algebra II and Trigonometry (H), Pre-calculus, Analytic Geometry and Probability & Statistics (H), Statistics. Honors Mathematics students continue to AP Calculus AB/BC in grade twelve.
